Why choose the quad

Quad vs SUV: real adventure versus surface-level comfort

Many tourists look for an SUV to "do a bit of off-road in Sardinia". It is almost always the wrong choice for two reasons: standard rental SUVs have policies that exclude off-road damage (a scratch under the sump = €2000 of charges to you), and the real tracks of Gallura — those that lead to the hidden coves of Punta Volpe or the Capo Ferro dirt routes — aren't made for cars, they're made for quads.

The Yamaha Raptor 700 solves exactly this: 686cc, 50hp, off-road suspension, road-legal in Italy with a B licence. Our insurance includes off-road cover (it's its natural use, not an exception). The price is premium because the vehicle is — but it's the only legal and safe way to access places that 99% of tourists only see on postcards.

When NOT to hire the quad: if you're travelling with more than 1 person (it's single-seat), if you need to carry luggage, if you're only comfortable on tarmac, if it rains hard (riding becomes slippery). In those cases we recommend a Fiat Panda + quad just for one day dedicated to off-road exploration.

The 4 off-road routes that justify the quad

When we deliver the Raptor we include a map with these 4 routes ridden by our adventurous customers. They aren't extreme trekking: they're accessible to anyone who rides sensibly.

  • Punta Volpe (Porto Rotondo) — 4 km dirt track leading to 3 coves inaccessible by car. Half a day of exploration, medium difficulty.
  • Capo Ferro (Baja Sardinia) — coastal trails to the lighthouse with views of the La Maddalena archipelago. Low difficulty, panoramas absolutely worth photographing at sunset.
  • Monte Nieddu (San Teodoro) — mountainous inland with waterfalls and natural granite pools. The final track is rough — perfect for the quad. Full day recommended.
  • Gallura inland (San Pantaleo, Arzachena) — paths between nuraghi, ancient olive trees and granite formations typical of Gallura. Variable difficulty, great for those who want to see authentic Sardinia beyond the sea.

Frequently asked questions

Is a B licence really enough to ride the Raptor 700?

Yes, in Italy the Raptor 700 is approved as an L7e motor quadricycle and is ridden with a B licence (the same as for a car). No motorbike licence is needed. Minimum age 18, at least 2 years on a B licence in our case. For riders under 25 we apply a young driver supplement.

Is it dangerous? I've never ridden a quad.

The Raptor 700 with its 686cc and 50hp is a serious machine, not a beach toy. If it's your first time on a quad, we give a 20-minute practical briefing at pickup: riding position, throttle control in turns, engine braking, what to do off-road. It must be ridden with respect, not fear: at 30-40 km/h on the Capo Ferro dirt tracks it's perfectly safe.

What's included besides the quad?

ECE 22.06 approved full-face helmet included (M/L/XL sizes), third-party + theft/fire insurance, technical briefing at pickup, map with the 5 best off-road routes in Gallura. On request we also supply a windproof jacket, dirt-track goggles and gloves — useful especially in June and September.

How much range does it have and where do I refuel?

11-litre tank, 6-8 L/100km in mixed road/off-road use = 150-180 km real range. For a day exploring the Punta Volpe coves or the Capo Ferro tracks it's more than enough. Most convenient station: the Q8 at Olbiamare on the SS125, or the IP station in Arzachena if you're in the Costa Smeralda area.

Can I ride onto the beach with the quad?

No, in Sardinia it is strictly forbidden to drive any motor vehicle on the beaches (fine 500-2000 € + impounding). The Raptor is approved for public roads and dirt tracks but not for sand. What you can do: park it on the adjacent dirt areas (e.g. Cala Petra Ruja, Punta Volpe) and walk the last 50-100 metres.

Can I refuel or wash it before returning?

Fuel: you return it with a full tank as at pickup, or pay for the remaining fuel at a transparent rate communicated in advance. Washing: not mandatory (we know you also use the quad off-road, it's normal it's dirty). If it's covered in thick mud we just ask you to brush off the worst so we don't slow down the next handover.
