Why choose the scooter

Scooter vs car: the advantages no one tells you about

Most Italian tourists who come to Costa Smeralda hire a car by default, out of habit, without considering alternatives. Wrong in many cases: in peak season the Honda SH scooter isn't just an option, it's the smartest choice.

Real benefits measured in our experience: travel time to Phi Beach at sunset from Baja Sardinia is 5 minutes by scooter, 30+ minutes by car because the road grinds to a halt. Parking at beaches like La Cinta or Brandinchi is free in motorbike areas, while a car pays 5 €/day (and in August fills up by 9:30 am). In the ZTL centres of Porto Cervo or San Pantaleo the scooter lets you park 30 metres from the Promenade or Piazzetta — the car has to use satellite car parks 800+ metres away. Weekly fuel consumption is a quarter that of a car.

When NOT to choose the scooter: if it rains (rare in Sardinian summer but possible, especially June and September), if you travel with more than 2 people, if you have large suitcases (a scooter carries one day bag plus a small rucksack under the seat), if you aren't comfortable on two wheels in summer traffic. For families with children we recommend a Fiat Panda + scooter combo.

Honda SH in Sardinia

Where the scooter is unbeatable

Based on our bookings, these are the destinations where the Honda SH is the most chosen vehicle (often paired with another):

  • Baja Sardinia — for Phi Beach and the Ritual Club. The evening climb to the sunset bar takes 5 minutes by scooter, an hour of queues by car. Bike parking 80 metres from the entrance, free.
  • Porto Cervo — pedestrian ZTL centre all summer. By scooter you park in dedicated bike areas 10 metres from the Promenade du Port; cars must stop in satellite car parks and walk in.
  • San Pantaleo — narrow Gallura village lanes and the Thursday market. The only sensible way to arrive by 11:00 without leaving the car 1 km from the piazzetta.
  • San Teodoro — for the beaches of La Cinta, Cala Brandinchi, Lu Impostu. Free bike parking vs car parking at €5/day that fills by 9:30 am.

Need to carry a family? See the Fiat Panda Hybrid. Looking for a vehicle for dirt tracks? Consider the Yamaha Raptor 700.

Frequently asked questions

Honda SH 125 or SH 350: which to choose?

The SH 125 is fine for short rides and city use (Olbia, San Teodoro, Pittulongu). The SH 350 is the right choice if you ride two-up with luggage, if you have to climb to Phi Beach (the Capo Ferro climb needs power), if you're covering long distances or want to take the SS131 (dual carriageway). Same look, same comfort, +120cc of muscle for whoever needs it.

Which licence do I really need?

SH 125: A1 licence (16+) or B licence (for those who got the B before 1/2/2013, valid up to 125cc; those who got it after must take the AM or A1 practical test). SH 350: A2 licence (18+) or A (24+). If you're not sure of your category, send us a photo of your licence on WhatsApp and we'll tell you what you can ride.

Are helmets and anti-theft included?

Always. We supply 2 ECE 22.06 approved jet helmets (M/L/XL sizes available, sanitised before each rental), a U-lock wheel anti-theft and theft/fire insurance cover in the price. For those wanting a full-face helmet we can arrange one on request.

How much does the Honda SH consume and how much is a tank?

SH 125: about 2.5 L/100km, 7.7 L tank = 280-300 km range. Full tank: ~13 €. SH 350: 3.0-3.2 L/100km, 9.1 L tank = 280 km range. Full tank: ~15 €. For a standard week's holiday in Costa Smeralda you do 1-2 fills total. Cost per kilometre is a fraction of a car's.

Can I park it free anywhere?

Almost. Two-wheelers in Sardinia can use dedicated bike/scooter areas, present at all the main beaches (La Cinta, Brandinchi, Phi Beach) and in ZTL centres such as Porto Cervo. On blue-line bays you pay half tariff or free depending on the council. Real saving for a week: 50-100 € compared to a car.

Can I go to the airport with the scooter? Where do I park?

Olbia Airport has a covered scooter park 50 m from the terminal at 3 €/day. Very handy if you park at the airport and ride off, but if you prefer we can deliver the scooter directly to baggage reclaim without you having to think about it.
